These guys openly announcing that they're trying to kill the MC and the sect master is just letting them go at it. What happened to subtleties and preparation of strength and man power for the upcoming competition with the other 2 major sects?

These sects are messed up.

The sect master is powerless to do much when each Division has an old fossil or two with a cultivation higher than his own! Plus many of them are...shall we say not exactly loyal to the sect. Tan Yun needs to clean house first. He will 1st establish his unquestioned dominance over the disciples...it will take quite a bit of doing. Then even if he is the most powerful and charismatic leader there are still many problems. The Sect is rotten with spies from the other 2 sects as well as various powerful noble families. Even several of his wives are spies from various noble families. The punishment for being a spy is death! Of course, anyone from any noble family can always join the sect, so long as they are loyal, but once you act on behalf of your noble family ( or your Empire!) you are spreading discord and dissention within the sect.
